The railway wedge—also called friction wedge or bogie wedge—is a one-piece casting that sits between the bolster and side frame of a freight-truck bogie. Its main jobs are:   

- Increase yaw damping to suppress hunting and car-body sway.  

- Lock bogie geometry, keeping wheel-sets parallel and gauge true.  

- Self-feed as faces wear, maintaining preload without re-tightening.  - Compensate for temperature and humidity changes, ensuring a stable friction coefficient.
