The railway wedge—also called friction wedge or bogie wedge—is a one-piece casting that sits between the bolster and side frame of a freight-truck bogie. Its main jobs are:
Increase yaw damping to suppress hunting and car-body sway.
Lock bogie geometry, keeping wheel-sets parallel and gauge true.
Self-feed as faces wear, maintaining preload without re-tightening. - Compensate for temperature and humidity changes, ensuring a stable friction coefficient.
Correct material and installation directly decide the life, performance and reliability of the entire rail system.
Tensile ≥ 1 200 MPa – 1.8× forged steel, yet 10 % lighter.
Elongation ≥ 4 % – absorbs impact without brittle fracture.
Fatigue limit 400-500 MPa** – doubles life under 20 kN cyclic shear.
Stable μ 0.28-0.34** from -50 °C to +70 °C, verified by CRRC tests.
Near-net casting** – 18 % machining cost saved.
