Track teeth (bucket teeth / ground-engaging tools) are the replaceable tips that bite into soil, rock or asphalt. They take the full brunt of digging forces and abrasive wear, so their material decides how long you dig before the next change-out.
Tooth tip / leading edge – abrasive soil erodes 3-5 mm per 100 hrs; once the wear groove reaches 40 % of section thickness the tooth snaps.
Pin-hole collar – impact fatigue cracks start here and propagate inward, causing the tooth to drop off in the trench.
Root fillet – high bending moment during prying creates transverse crack, especially in low-temperature climates.
Work-hardening surface – stress-induced austenite→martensite raises local hardness to 55 HRC where abrasion occurs .
High fatigue limit – 50 % higher than standard ductile iron, perfect for impact loading .
15–20 % lower cost than forged alloy steel route (less machining, no welding) .
Net-shape casting – complex self-sharpening profiles cast in one piece, no weld weak-zones .
Low-temperature toughness – good down to –40 °C, ideal for winter mining .
