ADI (Austempered Ductile Iron) - EU & Japan Standard

Today, we will dive into the world of international standards for ADI in the EU and Japan, and take a chronological look at their development history.

Japan: JIS G5503 - 1995 opens the door to ADI standardization

Japan's development in the field of ADI has a clear trajectory. In the 1980s and 1990s, the global manufacturing industry was seeking breakthroughs, and high-performance materials became popular. ADI gradually entered the vision of the Japanese industrial community with its unique performance advantages. Japan was keenly aware that this material had great application potential in industries such as automobiles and machinery manufacturing, so it began to actively prepare for the formulation of ADI standards.

In 1995, JIS G5503 - 1995, the Japanese ADI ductile iron industrial standard, was officially introduced. At that time, Japan's manufacturing industry was in a period of rapid development, and the requirements for material performance were getting higher and higher. ADI not only has high strength and good toughness, but also has excellent wear and corrosion resistance, which just meets the needs of Japanese industry for high-performance materials.

The JIS G5503 - 1995 standard covers many key aspects of ADI. In terms of technical requirements, there are strict regulations on the chemical composition and metallographic structure of ADI to ensure that the material has stable performance. The test method section details how to test various performance indicators of ADI, such as hardness test and tensile test. The inspection rules clarify the inspection process and standards before the product leaves the factory to ensure that only qualified products can enter the market. In addition, regulations are also made for marking, packaging, transportation and storage to prevent products from being damaged during circulation. Although the specific content of this standard is not fully disclosed, from its framework and purpose, like international standards such as ISO 17804 and ASTM A897/A897M, it is all centered around the performance and quality of ADI.

In the Japanese industrial sector, many well-known brands have actively responded to and followed this standard. Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation (now called Nippon Steel) is a giant in the global steel industry. As early as the early stage of ADI standard formulation, Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation invested a lot of manpower and material resources in research and development. They continuously innovated the production process of ADI and produced high-quality ADI products. These products are widely used in the manufacture of automotive parts, such as key components such as engine crankshafts and connecting rods, which greatly improved the performance and reliability of automobiles. There is also Komatsu, which is a well-known name in the field of construction machinery. Komatsu applies ADI to key components such as hydraulic cylinders and gears of equipment such as excavators and loaders. In the past, these components were prone to wear and tear in harsh working environments and had a short service life. After using ADI materials, the wear resistance and strength of the components have been significantly improved, the reliability and service life of the equipment have been greatly increased, the maintenance cost has been reduced, and the production efficiency has been improved.

Europe: EN 1564 - 1997 promotes the standardization and unification of ADI

Europe also has a deep foundation in the formulation of ADI standards. Before the introduction of the EN 1564-1997 standard, each European member state had its own ADI standard, which to some extent hindered the circulation and application of ADI materials in Europe. In order to break this situation, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) took a key step in 1997 to unify the standards of 19 European member states and formulate the EN 1564-1997 ADI standard.

The content of this standard is very comprehensive. In terms of classification, it divides ADI into different material grades, and each grade has clear technical requirements. For example, for ADI in different application scenarios, its strength, toughness and other performance indicators have different regulations. The test method section specifies the test methods of various performance indicators in detail to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the test results. The inspection rules clarify the inspection process and standards of each link from raw material procurement to product delivery to ensure the consistency of product quality. Regulations on marking, packaging, transportation and storage also provide guarantees for the circulation of ADI materials.

With the continuous advancement of science and technology and changes in market demand, the EN 1564 standard is also being revised and improved. For example, the release of DIN EN 1564:2006, DIN EN 1564:2012 and other versions were adjusted according to the technological development level and market demand at that time. These revisions not only improved the technical requirements of ADI, but also expanded its scope of application.

In the European industrial sector, many well-known brands actively follow the EN 1564 standard. Germany's ThyssenKrupp is a global leader in steel and engineering technology. ThyssenKrupp has always been at the forefront of the world in the research and development and production of ADI. They continue to invest resources in technological innovation to improve the performance and quality of ADI. The ADI products it produces are widely used in the fields of automobile manufacturing and rail transportation. In automobile manufacturing, ADI is used to manufacture gears, shafts and other components of the transmission system, which improves the power transmission efficiency and reliability of the car. In the field of rail transportation, ADI is used to manufacture key components such as wheels and bogies of trains, which enhances the safety and stability of trains. There is also Sweden's SKF. As a world-renowned bearing manufacturer, SKF has been committed to improving the performance and quality of bearings. They applied ADI to bearing products, and took advantage of ADI's high strength and high wear resistance to improve the bearing's load-bearing capacity and service life. In high-speed mechanical equipment, the use of ADI bearings can reduce friction and wear, reduce energy consumption, and improve the operating efficiency of equipment.

From JIS G5503-1995 to EN 1564-1997, Japan and Europe have made remarkable achievements in the formulation of ADI international standards. These standards not only regulate the production and application of ADI, but also promote the development and application of ADI technology worldwide. In the future, with the continuous advancement of science and technology and the continuous development of industry, ADI standards will continue to improve and innovate, providing more powerful support for the development of various industries.
